Ecclestone says car makers won't leave

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone does not believe manufacturers will withdraw from the sport in the wake of the FIA pressing ahead with plans for a standard engine.

As the car makers refused to comment today in response to the FIA announcement that a tender process has begun for a standard engine from 2010, Ecclestone played down talks of teams pulling out - saying the car makers should be happy that moves were being made to help them reduce costs.

"It is what everyone was expecting," Ecclestone told autosport.com. "They have announced that they are trying to get people to use homologated engines. We are just trying to get a level playing field, to be honest with you."

Asked if he thought car makers would remain in F1 in spite of the move, he replied: "I hope so.

"I don't see why they should leave," Ecclestone added. "We are saving them an awful lot of money, I hope."

The FIA announced on Friday that it will open a tender process for standard engines and transmissions to be used from 2010 to 2013.

But added that F1's manufacturers will still be able to build their own engines when standard power units are introduced from the start of 2010, according to the sport's governing body.

A spokesman for the FIA also confirmed that the governing body now plans to amend F1's regulations.

Ecclestone said that he did not think the tender would stop manufacturers using F1 as a showcase for technology and added that all the FIA was trying to do was reduce the cost of being able to compete on a level playing field.

"I don't see why they should [pull out]," he said. "Why should someone pull out because they are going to save a lot of money?

"All the technical things will still be there so they can show all their talents.

"What we want is to reduce the necessity to spend to be competitive. That is the simplest thing."

Ferrari to probe below par performance

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says the Italian squad need to analyse why they were no match to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Ferrari were very strong in the previous two races in Singapore and Japan, but both Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were unable to pose a threat to Hamilton in today's race.

The Briton finished over 14 seconds in front of Massa, who will go into his home race with a seven-point deficit to Hamilton.

Domenicali admitted his team will have to look at the reasons why their performance was below par this weekend in order to make sure they are competitive in Brazil.

The Italian also conceded Hamilton was in a different league today.

"They (McLaren) were simply much faster than us and this is the reason why I have to say that if you consider what we could achieve in these conditions we achieved the maximum, because honestly today Lewis was in another league, he was driving perfectly, fast, consistent and we couldn't even think of attacking him," Domenicali told reporters.

"The thing that we need to understand, going to Brazil, is why and how this is possible, considering that in Singapore and in Fuji we were really fast, both in the fast laps and in the pace.

"And so we need to work and understand because for sure we cannot be in Brazil fighting - as we said at the beginning of the season - for the titles in the condition where our car is less competitive in these conditions, with such a big gap to our main competitors, to McLaren.

"I don't expect that in one week all the others have made a step which we haven't, so it's something connected to our performance, this is why we need to work hard because for sure we are ahead of the last race of the season and we need to make sure that we do everything in order to make sure we have a good car for the last Grand Prix."

Massa, who looked set for third before Raikkonen let him pass, will need to outscore Hamilton by eight points in his home race in two weeks' time to win the title.

And Domenicali reckons the Brazilian will be feeling less pressure in the final race than he was in China.

"I don't think so because I think that today was the most tense race for Felipe because today, you know that there was the possibility for Lewis to be the champion at this Grand Prix," Domenicali added.

"Considering the fact that he has seen that he was not competitive enough to beat Lewis today, and the fact that you never know about the reliability, you have to really arrive at the point where you say 'listen, OK, we've done what we could have done, as a maximum.'

So I am expecting Felipe to be more - I don't think it's correct to say relaxed – but more tranquil in Brazil rather than here, and I'm pretty sure that he will handle the pressure in a positive way.

The team boss also rejected talks of controversy over the move to allow Massa to take second from Raikkonen, saying McLaren had done the same before.

"You don't remember what happened in Germany and no one has complained, between Kovalainen and Hamilton? Today was pretty normal, I would say.

"The drivers know the team's interest without saying anything so... I respect what Lewis has said in the press conference. Lewis said it's a team game and we did a good job."

Dennis would take Ferrari 1-2 in Brazil

McLaren team boss Ron Dennis says he see no problems with a Ferrari one-two at the Brazilian Grand Prix if it means Lewis Hamilton secures the drivers' title.

Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix in dominant style on Sunday to go into the season finale with a seven-point lead over Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

The gap, the same the Briton had ahead of last year's final race, means Hamilton will just need a fifth place finish at Interlagos to secure the title, no matter what Massa does.

Dennis, who team are 11 points behind Ferrari in the constructors' championship, said McLaren will make sure they stay out of trouble all weekend and try to make the race as boring as possible.

"We have no problem with Massa coming first and Kimi coming second," Dennis told reporters. "It doesn't really worry us. I don't think they're going to have a performance advantage, but it doesn't really worry us.

"Obviously don't have to win that race to win Lewis his first championship. We will compete fiercely through practice and qualifying, see where we are and take a view from there."

He added: "We just need to remain disciplined. At the end of the day, we're in a better position than our competitors because we're seven points ahead. The outcome depends on where the other cars are, but we go there knowing we can finish third, fourth or fifth.

"Our target will be to finish the race and do what we have to do to win. The most important thing will be to stay out of trouble.

"We want to win everything. We're looking at the ifs and buts in the championship for constructors, but obviously we're in a strong position. To win the world championship we have to finish the next race, it's as simple as that. OK, we have less to do, but we need to be really focused and calm.

"It's going to b a challenge for the whole team to do what's necessary, and not to make any mistakes. I think for everybody it will be a very exciting race, but our objective will be to make it boring for everybody."

Dennis praised Hamilton's performance in China, saying the Briton showed he can cope with the pressure.

"He thrives on pressure and if there is a challenge to his integrity it makes him stronger," Dennis added.

The McLaren chief said he was also proud of his team's approach this weekend.

"We have to walk the talk. If you are going to sign up to having the right values, and the right approach to racing, it's what you have to do. I'm particularly proud of the tam's calmness throughout this weekend.

"I think we've done all the right things, although obviously it's disappointing that we didn't score points with Heikki. That's one of those things."

I nije pogriješio...

Honda to join McLaren in Algarve

Honda Racing have confirmed that they too will join the first Formula One test at the new Autodromo Internacional Algarve in Portugal in December.

The soon-to-be-completed track is to host its first F1 test from December 15-17, with McLaren having been the first team to commit themselves to the outing.

A Honda Racing spokeswoman confirmed on Friday that the Japanese manufacturer would also be taking part in the test, with Ferrari also believed to be seriously considering running there as well.

Schumacher: Hamilton could beat my record

Michael Schumacher is convinced his record of seven Formula 1 world championship titles will be beaten one day. The German believes Lewis Hamilton has all it takes to beat his record one day. The 23-year-old Briton could claim his first title this weekend in Brazil if he manages to finish within the top five at Interlagos.

In BBC's television show Inside Sport Schumacher was asked if he believes someone will ever beat his record of seven F1 titles. Schumacher answered saying: "I would say, absolutely, yes Hamilton could win seven titles. Nobody thought, even me, that I could beat Fangio. Then I did. Records are there to be beaten.

"I'm quite relaxed that one day it will happen - whether it's Lewis, whether it's Massa, or whoever. It might be someone of the current or of the future that could or will do it. But I've got no problem about it."

Standard engine not feasible - Mercedes

Norbert Haug has added yet another F1 manufacturer's opposing voice to plans for a standard engine formula.

The German, representing McLaren's carmaker partner Mercedes-Benz, told Auto Motor und Sport that he does not "believe a single engine is feasible for the manufacturers."

Haug said F1 remains a technical challenge, but notes that "in recent years, technical excellence has been limited."

Mercedes therefore joins Ferrari, Toyota, Honda and BMW in spelling out their distaste at the prospect of a third party supplying either an engine or a mandatory detailed design in 2010 and beyond.

Toyota and Ferrari this week threatened to quit F1 over the issue, but Haug told Bild newspaper that he is hopeful a "solution can be found, but everyone must be prepared to compromise."

BMW's Mario Theissen explained to the German news agency DPA: "We don't expect the standard engine to come after the talks held so far, and our Formula One concept is based on this."

Renault boss Flavio Briatore told the Welt newspaper that, instead of standard engines, F1 will 'probably' pursue the route of a future engine formula that, "on the basis of costs, will not go beyond certain development borders."

Alonso set to announce Renault future

Former world champion Fernando Alonso will end speculation about his future on Wednesday when he is confirmed as Renault's lead driver for 2009.

The Spaniard has been considering his options for next year following a challenging season on a return to the French car manufacturer that helped him to world titles in 2005 and 2006.

But despite overtures from Honda Racing and BMW Sauber, Alonso has decided to remain at Renault for another season.

Renault team boss Flavio Briatore told autosport.com on Sunday night in Brazil that the team were planning to reveal their driver line-up for next year this week.

"I will confirm my drivers on Wednesday," he said. "That will be the announcement but I cannot say who the drivers will be."

Sources suggest that Brazilian Nelson Piquet is now favourite to keep the second seat - having been handed a stay of execution following a step forward in performance in recent races.

Renault test drivers Lucas di Grassi and Romain Grosjean had been linked to the second seat this season.

Briatore would not confirm speculation about Piquet when asked if the Brazilian would indeed be staying on board.

"We will see," he said. "You know, it is not a surprise anymore."

Honda to test Senna this month

Bruno Senna will get his first taste of Formula One machinery when he tests for the Honda Racing team later this month, it was announced on Monday.

The GP2 championship runner-up, nephew of the late three-time F1 champion Ayrton, will join Honda for the team's first test of the winter in Barcelona from 17 to 19 November.

The Brazilian, 25, will test this year's RA108 as Honda evaluate him for a possible drive for the 2009 season.

The team are yet to confirm who will partner Jenson Button in 2009, with Rubens Barrichello's future still in doubt.

"We are delighted to provide Bruno with the opportunity to test for us later this month as we continue to explore all the driver options available to us for next season," said team principal Ross Brawn.

"After an impressive year in GP2 this will be a chance for Bruno to prove that he is ready to make the step up to Formula One.

"Our objective is to have the best drivers available to us next season and our evaluation of Bruno's performance will be rigorous.

"We are looking forward to seeing how he performs. Over the next two weeks Bruno will be spending a lot of time with us at our Brackley base, working closely with our engineers and on the simulator to ensure he is fully prepared for this important test."

Senna admitted he was delighted about the opportunity.

"I am obviously very excited about being given my first Formula One test and to have that opportunity with Honda is a dream come true," he said. "Although I am still only in my fourth year of motor racing, I have wanted to test an F1 car for a very long time and I feel that I am ready for that challenge.

"I have already spent some time at the factory in Brackley and have enjoyed meeting the team and working with the engineers to prepare for this test. Everyone has been very supportive and it is particularly special for me to have the chance to work with Ross Brawn.

"I'm excited about getting in the car in two weeks' time but I know this is a big opportunity so I want to learn as much as I can before I get to Barcelona. I hope to show the team what I can do, so it's up to me now to do a good job."

Hamilton pledges future to McLaren

Lewis Hamilton has told the entire McLaren team that he would be happy to stay with them for the rest of his Formula One career.

The newly-crowned world champion made the pledge in front of 1000 McLaren employees at the team's Woking headquarters as he was welcomed back from Brazil.

"I love this team, I'm going nowhere," Hamilton said. "This is the best team in the world. I'm very proud of everything McLaren have achieved.

"Even when I was growing up, when I first knew that racing was what I wanted to do, I knew that it was McLaren I wanted to drive for.

"I used to go to the old headquarters and see Ayrton Senna's championship-winning car, [Mika] Hakkinen's too. And I used to touch the steering wheels and dream that some day I'd have one with my name on and the number one on the front. And now the dream has come true."

Hamilton reiterated his desire to win at least three world titles for Ron Dennis's team, not least to get his hands on the McLaren F1 LM road car that he has been promised should he achieved that feat.

"It's the coolest car in the world and I want to earn it," added Hamilton.

Today's event at the McLaren Technology Centre following a ten-minute firework display for the staff last night, at which the team's success was toasted with champagne, music - including 'My Way' - and a speech from team boss Ron Dennis, who was quoted as saying "well, we did it our way."

The 10-metre long entrance sign at the factory has also been changed from its usual white colour to the 'rocket red' used on McLaren's victory celebration t-shirts, and now features a congratulatory message for Hamilton.

Massa to congratulate Hamilton in person

Defeated Formula One title contender Felipe Massa has revealed that he wants to greet new world champion Lewis Hamilton in person and congratulate the McLaren driver on his title success.

The Brazilian came within a lap of achieving his life's ambition, but while he won the Brazilian Grand Prix, the title slipped from the Ferrari driver's grasp as Hamilton passed Timo Glock to take the fifth position he needed to win the championship on the last corner of the final lap.

"I want to meet Hamilton and his father to tell them they deserved the title," Massa told Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport.

"I re-watched the race on TV: for Lewis that last lap was a drama, he was locking the wheels everywhere as he was trying to recover," added Massa, who also dismissed out of hand wild conspiracies that the Toyota driver may have moved over to help Hamilton.

"Glock didn't let himself be overtaken on purpose," said Massa.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo added that he didn't realised Hamilton had passed Glock initially, but said Massa's defeat will build his character and make him a stronger competitor next year,

"I did see the overtaking manoeuvre, but I wasn't thinking of Glock, I thought it was a lapped car," he told the newspaper. "I don't know however, if I had enough time to jump up from the armchair, as the truth revealed itself immediately.

"My pain was for Massa, for what he had done, for his perfect race. But he was strong, good and fair.

"Experiences like these make your life better. Together with the man, a great driver is growing at Ferrari."

Brawn: Title will make Hamilton stronger

Honda's sporting director Ross Brawn believes Lewis Hamilton will be a stronger championship campaigner in the future now that the McLaren has driver achieved his first world title.

Brawn, who helped guide Michael Schumacher to all seven of his record haul of titles, said that while Hamilton was 'understandably' tense during last weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix title finale, he would have experience to handle the pressure more easily in years to come.

"It does remove some of the tension," said Brawn. "I cannot really judge, but Lewis looked tight this weekend - and that is understandable.

"That won't be there any more.

"If he gets close to his next championship, he will know what to do, he will know how it works out, and he will just be stronger next time around. So it does help."

Brawn paid tribute to both Hamilton and his Ferrari rival Felipe Massa, adding that he could not remember such a dramatic climax to a world championship.

"It was the most exciting championship finale I can recall," he said. "So, to win it on the last couple of corners was sensational.

"It is great. A fantastic day for F1 and the championship was won in a fair and proper fashion with very little controversy this year, which is good for F1 as well."

Brawn also said that the tension of the moment was evident on the pitwall, despite having to focus on what his own team was doing in the final race of the season.

"We had a lot going on, we took a few punts on tyre choice which did not work out, but from our position in the race we did not have a lot to lose," he said. "But we did get drawn into it in the last couple of laps, especially when [sebastian] Vettel got past Hamilton and realised the consequences of that, then you could see [Timo] Glock was in trouble.

"But both Felipe and Lewis are fantastic drivers to be honest. They have done the sport a credit, both of them, with their approach and their attitude. It is a shame that one of them had to lose as both did a great job."

Asked whether he thought McLaren had made the right call with strategy, given how close Hamilton came to losing the title, Brawn replied: "Well, I've been there myself – and you can make heavy weather of it. So I understand what happens, but they came close.

"I think if Glock had hung on for another couple of corners, which was fate really, then they would have been sat here wondering if they had called it right. But racing is like that."
